Transition game lifts Lyme past Harrisville Girls in Gobbler Classic; Morristown wins consolation game

MORRISTOWN - Lyme Central entered the game with just six available players.

The Lady Indians finished with five but the bare minimum was enough as Lyme used excellent transition play in expanding a 11-8 first quarter lead to 32-14 at halftime in a 57-41 decision over Harrisville in the finals of the Morristown Booster Club’s Gobbler Classic.

“One of our strengths this season is our transition game and our quickness with our press. Right now, we have six girls playing, another that will get eligible with practices this week and hopefully we get one girl back from injury. Once we get those players available we should be okay in our league. These wins gave us a little confidence,” said Lyme coach Mark Wilson.

Harrisville’s coach Pete Wood was also quick to point out Lyme’s strenghts.

“They just have some really quick players and some good shooters. Their tempo was the key,” said Wood.

Tournament MVP Yanna Ososkalo broke open the contest in the second quarter where she nailed two threes in a eight point effort during a 21-6 run. Yanna Ososkalo finished with 18 points, five steals, four assists, and four boards.

Alison Tarwater tossed in 17 points including three three-pointers. All Tournament selection Enesa Ososkalo generated 14 points and including six in the second quarter while Taylor Brown (five rebounds) added six points and was named to the Tournament’s Sportsmanship team.

Heather Hadfield scored 13 points to pace Harrisville. Emory Matott added nine and was selected to the All Tourney Team. Courtney LaBeau tallied seven and Georgi Baker scored five. Abby LaFaver was named to the All Sportsmanship Team and finished with three points and a host of rebounds.

In the consolation game, Morristown outlasted LaFargeville 49-44.

Morristown 49, LaFargeville 44: Three girls produced double figures as the Rockets took a 16-11 lead after the first quarter and held off a LaFargeville fourth quarter rally (17-9).

“We played a lot better tonight than Friday. Offensively, we got some baskets to go down. But we have to learn to close out games. We missed way too many shots in the fourth quarter. But hopefully, this win will give us confidence early in the season,” said MCS Coach Rich Rupert.

Taylor Piercey tallied a game high 13 points and grabbed 19 rebounds leading the Rockets. All Tournament selection Jessica Geddes tallied 12 points, four rebounds and four steals while Jordyn Tully added 12 points and was selected to the All Tournament Sportsmanship team.

Sam Green added four points, seven boards and four blocks while Liz Troiano added four rebounds and a big basket with 1:13 remaining for 45-40 lead. Micaela Roberts chipped in six points.

All Tournament Sportsmanship Team selection Amber Klock scored 13 for LaFargeville who finished the game with four players . All Tourney selection Ali Hoover added nine and Logan Labiendo and Destiny James each scored eight.

Harrisville claimed the Junior Varsity Championship with a 40-25 win over Morristown. Tournament MVP Alyssa Fowler scored 19 points leading the way. All Tournament Sportsmanship selection Elysa LaPlatney added seven while Mary LaPlatney and All Tourney selection Morgan Matott each scored five.

Logan Green scored 11 pacing Morristown and was named to the All Tourney Sportmanship team. Meg Vollmer’s strong rebounding earned an All Tourney award and Victoria Mitchell and Haley Whitmarsh added six and five points respectively.
