Railroad spur getting closer to reality at Massena’s industrial park

MASSENA — A proposed rail spur that would connect Curran Renewable Energy to the rail track owned by CSX that runs in the vicinity of the industrial park remains on track.

“The rail spur seems to be moving forward,” said Thomas G. Sullivan, executive director of the Business Development Corporation for a Great Massena. “We’ve been in some very healthy discussions with CSX. CSX is willing to work with us and we’re excited.”

BDC board member Paul A. Rufa, who has been heavily involved with the railroad project, said it’s his understanding work could begin as soon as later this winter.

“I spoke with CSX on Monday, and they’re moving along quite quickly,” Mr. Rufa said. “I know with the conversation I had with them they are still looking at a January start date and a possible August completion date.”

Mr. Sullivan said January was also a date that he had heard and he’s hoping to have some more concrete information by the BDC’s January meeting.

“Hopefully by January we’ll have a more specific time frame,” Mr. Sullivan said.

The project will be paid for through a combination of grants from the state and federal governments.
