Ogdensburg library will upgrade security in January

OGDENSBURG — Security upgrades at Ogdensburg Public Library could be evident as soon as January.

Library Director Wayne L. Miller said one of three circulation desk work stations and some affixing of small electronic tracking chips for books may be in place. But first a consultant must be hired to oversee the project. Two firms, 3M of Minnesota and Bibliotecha of Georgia, are being considered.

The library received a $10,000 Northern New York Library Network grant, an additional $4,500 and, officials hope, $12,000 in city funds to begin installation of a radio frequency identification system to protect its inventory of 72,000 books plus DVDs, tapes and learning materials.

The $10,000 grant will pay for two work stations and 13,000 tags for the most frequently lent books. The $4,500 will cover the cost of a third work station and tags for nonfiction materials.

The chip gives the circulated library property an identity. Once it has been checked out, the book borrower will have to pass through a security gate at the entrance to the 312 Washington St. library. “It reads chips to know if the book is checked out,” Mr. Miller said.

The cost of the security gate alone is estimated at $10,000, which officials hope to cover with the library’s 2014 city budget request for $12,000.

Mr. Miller is preparing for the possibility that he won’t get the $12,000.

“I am looking at other sources,” he said.

The entire project’s cost was initially set at $75,000, with 12 to 18 months needed to complete the tagging. But Mr. Miller said some of the equipment’s prices have gone down.

“It’s probably going to be closer to $50,000,” he said.
