With Christmas just 21 days away, St. Lawrence County Toys for Tots still needs donations to help make the holiday season a special one for kids across the county.
So far the organization has received primarily toys for younger children, but not enough for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14.
We have enough baby dolls, we think, to tide us through, organizer Laurel Lee Roethel said. We have a lot of Barbies right now and a lot of Hot Wheels.
Last year the organization gave toys to well over 6,000 kids, said Ms. Roethel, and the hope is to get toys to at least that many children again this year.
But the organization is lacking toys like makeup sets and sporting goods that appeal to older children.
Ms. Roethel said needed are toys that can be used outside like footballs and soccer balls. Age-appropriate DVDs that would be suitable for the whole family would make ideal gifts as well.
It will help to make Christmas happy for a lot of kids, Ms. Roethel said.
Drop boxes are located across St. Lawrence County, Toys for Tots Coordinator Raymond J. Cutway said, providing an easy way for community members to help the cause.
Drop box locations include The Journal, the Daily Courier-Observer, Massena;, Rushton Place, Canton; Walmart locations in Potsdam and Ogdensburg; and all Kinney Drugs, Dollar General, Family Dollar and Walgreens stores.
In addition to donating toys, people are encouraged to contact Mr. Cutway via email, firstname.lastname@example.org, to make a tax-deductible monetary contribution.
Mr. Cutway will also be setting up outside several stores throughout the month in an effort to collect toys.
