POTSDAM - The Thanksgiving Break saw the SUNY Potsdam winter sports teams compete in just one contest last week.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Connor Merrill made 12-16 field goals to score a game-high 32 points, Tanner Brooks added 20 and Aldin Medunjanin put in 19 as host Skidmore College used a 13-0 second-half run to rally past SUNY Potsdam 87-74 in a nonconference men’s basketball game on Tuesday night in Saratoga Springs.

The Bears (1-3) traded the lead back-and-forth with the Thoroughbreds (3-1) throughout the entire first half. Potsdam last led 51-50 with 16:04 remaining in the second half before Skidmore caught fire from three-point range to help give them a 12-point lead that it would not relinquish.

Four Bears’ players scored in double figures with sophomore guard Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y.) leading the way with 13 points. Estramonte made a pair of 3-pointers to close out the half that gave Potsdam a 45-39 halftime advantage.

Senior Brandon Williams (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Colin Peterson (Hilton, N.Y.) each totaled 11 points and Rishawd Hendricks (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Zac Adams (Potsdam, N.Y.) scored 10 apiece.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Freshman forward Vinny Caligiuri (Shoreham, N.Y.) led the Bears with a goal and an assist for his first collegiate points to help the SUNY Potsdam men’s hockey team to a 5-3 home against SUNY Canton last Friday.

Caligiuri followed that up that performance by adding another goal in Saturday’s 6-1 rematch victory at SUNY Canton.

Alexane Rodrigue (Monkland, Ontario) were honored by the Eastern College Athletic Conference West for their play during the week ending Nov. 24. Ott earned her second Rookie of the Week award this month and Rodrigue makes her first appearance on the conference honor roll.

Rodrigue, a sophomore goalie, went 1-0-1 in two starts last weekend and allowed just one goal on 54 shots in 125 minutes. On Friday, she stopped all 24 shots she faced for her first career shutout in a scoreless tie at Cortland. She then allowed just one goal in the Bears 3-1 win over the Red Dragons on Saturday. The third period goal she allowed ended her scoreless streak at 129 minutes and 51 seconds.
