Shirley Felshaw Smith , 90 a long time resident of Lee Center, NY , passed away Sunday, December 1, 2013 in Ogdensburg, NY. She had been a resident of Ogdensburg United Helpers Riverledge Facility for the past five years.
Mrs. Smith was born July 20, 1923, in Rome, NY, the daughter of Clyde and Grace Evans Felshaw. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1939 and the Utica School of Commerce in 1941, after which she worked as a secretary for several years as well as operated the Felshaw Drug Store in Lee Center.
Shirley married Lambert A. Smith on June 26, 1942 in the Lee Center United Methodist Church. He passed away on September 22, 2000. Shirley was a member of the Lee Center United Methodist Church, where she served as a Sunday school teacher and officer in the United Methodist Womens group for many years. She also was a life member and past Matron of the Lake Delta Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Lee Unity Senior Citizens and also served as a Town of Lee Tax Collector for ten years. Since the mid 1940s, Shirley enjoyed being a homemaker and spending time with family and friends at the family camp on Brantingham Lake in Brantingham, NY.
Mrs. Smith is survived by one son, Larry E. Smith, Ogdensburg, NY ; one daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Alan Dawes, Clemmons, NC; four grandchildren, Jayson K. Smith and wife Nancy , Lisbon, NY; Jeffrey A. Smith and companion Staci LaFave, Ogdensburg, NY; Neal L. Dawes and wife Anne, Winston-Salem, NC; and Mandi L. Dawes ,Rocky Mount, NC; four great-grandchildren, Gwen Smith, Michael Dawes, Darshina Dawes and Sara Dawes; brother-in-law H. Gerald Smith, Rome, NY; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one great granddaughter, Mara Smith.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Prince-Boyd & Hyatt Home For Funerals, Inc., 210 W. Court Street, Rome, NY. Interment will be in Lee Valley Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the Home For Funerals Thursday 4 to 7 p.m. and Friday 10 to 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Lee Center United Methodist Church, P.O.
