College cross country: Saints’ Grohn, coaching staff lauded


St. Lawrence freshman Lisa Grohn was named the Liberty League’s rookie of the year in cross country, and the Saints’ coaching staff was honored as the conference’s top staff for the 10th consecutive year in voting by the league’s coaches.

Grohn’s first season of intercollegiate competition included three top-10 finishes and a seventh-place showing among freshmen runners in the NCAA championships.

She was also the top rookie finisher in the Liberty League championships (fifth overall), the top first-year finisher and honored as rookie of the year in the New York State Collegiate Track Conference championship, and the first freshman finisher in the Atlantic Regional Championship (20th overall).

St. Lawrence coach Mike Howard, who is assisted by Kate Curran, was named Liberty League coach of the year for the sixth consecutive season after winning his sixth straight league championship.

On the men’s side, St. Lawrence men’s cross country coach John Newman was honored with his seventh straight coach of the year award in the Liberty League and his 10th in the past 11 seasons.

He led the Saints to the Liberty League and NYSCTC titles and to a team appearance in the NCAA Division III championships, thanks to a fourth-place finish in the NCAA Atlantic Regional championships.

Freshman Thomas Caulfield became the sixth St. Lawrence runner to earn rookie of the year in the last seven years after finishing as the top St. Lawrence runner in the NCAA championships.

He finished sixth at NCAAs, earning NYSCTC rookie of the year honors and was the top rookie finisher in the Liberty League championships, finishing seventh overall.
