MADRID - The Madrid-Waddington Central varsity boys basketball team opened the 2013-14 season by downing Norwood-Norfolk 60-14 in the first round of their John Dinneen Memorial Tournament on Tuesday.
Along with advancing the Yellowjackets to the title game on Thursday against Tupper Lake at 7:30 p.m., the game served as an NAC East Division victory. Tupper Lake downed Heuvelton 68-36.
M-W 60, N-N 14: The Yellowjackets set the tone for the convincing win in the first quarter where they outscored the Flyers 19-2. Aaron Armstrong anchored the winning effort with 11 points, four steals and four assists. Jacob Barney (4 assists, 3 steals) and Zach Brock chipped in 10 points each.
Garrett Waite and Kyle Steenberg paced the Flyers with three points each while Ryan Fullerton, Dustin Fisher, Brett Barkley and Skyler Stanford all finished with two.
The Flyers will face Heuvelton in the consolation game on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Tupper Lake 68, Heuvelton 39: Mitch Keniston led the Lumberjacks with 12 points followed by Roger Delair with 11.
Jeff Arquitt paced the Bulldogs with 12 points.
In an NAC Central Division boys basketball game played on Tuesday, OFA rolled to a 91-50 win at home over Franklin Academy.
Kinnon LaRose tossed through 25 points and Matt Piercey struck for another 20 as the Blue Devils ran out to a 32-12 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Austin Lamay led the Huskies with 10 points. Jordan Yando chipped in another eight.
In NAC girls basketball matchups on Tuesday, Brushton-Moira gained a 54-39 East Division win at Colton-Pierrepont while Hammond surged to a 89-27 interdivisional decision at home over Potsdam.
B-M 54, C-P 39: In Colton, Morgan Doyle fired through a career-high 29 points, inlcuding two three-pointers but it wasnt enough as the host Lady Colts dropped their division opener go the Lady Panthers. Marsh chipped in eight followed by Andrea Aldous with two.
Arielle Gary paced B-M with 12 points while Jenna Dufrane and Kirstin Barrett each netted 12.
Hammond 89, Potsdam 27: In Hammond, the host Lady Red Devils ran out to a 30-7 lead by the end of the first quarter in downing the Lady Sandstoners.
Bre Sapp led Potsdam with 17 points followed by Katherine Blanchard with eight.
Cassi Whalen fired through 23 points for Hammond followed by Courtney Bova with 21, Paige Frisina with 16 and Mikayla Horton with 13.
