City to study parking concerns near State Office Building

A state official has expressed concerns about parking issues and vehicles exiting the Dulles State Office Building’s parking garage onto Academy Street.

In a Nov. 19 letter to City Manager Sharon A. Addison, building Superintendent Sean M. Hennessey wrote that motorists are having a difficult time making a left-hand turn onto Academy Street because of oncoming traffic and vehicles parked along that street.

“There have been several close calls at that location, and I was hoping something could be done to alleviate this concern,” he wrote.

Mr. Hennessey has proposed moving the city’s no parking sign at the location to bring it closer to the intersection of Gotham and Academy streets, adding “it would allow greater time for drivers leaving our facility to react to oncoming traffic.”

The Watertown City Council briefly discussed Mr. Hennessey’s request on Monday night but took no action.

On Tuesday, Ms. Addison said she has instructed the police department and Eugene P. Hayes, superintendent of public works, to look into the situation. They will examine traffic flow, speeds of vehicles and parking.

She said she did not know whether a parking change will be made.

It would take a change in the city’s parking ordinance and approval by council members to do so, she said.
