Madrid-Waddington to face Tupper Lake, Thursday, in John Dinneen Boys Basketball Championship Game

MADRID - Two active defensive teams will face each other on Thursday in the 2013 John Dinneen Tournament Championship game at Madrid-Waddington. The defending Section 10 Class D champions and host M-W will face Tupper Lake at 7:30 p.m.

The Jackets rolled past Norwood-Norfolk in the nightcap of Tuesday opening round against Norwood-Norfolk. The Lumberjacks prevailed over Heuvelton.

Tupper Lake 68, Heuvelton 36: Balance in the first quarter led a quick, athletic and defensively active Lumberjack squad to a 22-1 lead. Vondel Wesby fired in two first quarter threes leading a seven player scoring attack.

Ten players reached the scoring column for coach Steve Skiff’s club as Mitch Keniston scored 12, Roger Delair tallied 11, Morgan Stevens and Wesby each tallied eight and Liam LaMere scored six.

“We are going to be a lot better this season than last year. We’ve got some depth,” Skiff noted.

Jeff Arquitt scored 12 points and Mike Martin added eight for Heuvelton which gradually improved throughout the game.

“We didn’t have a very good first quarter but we improved and played a good second half. We are going to take some lumps early but once we get our roles down we should be okay,” said HCS coach Josh McAllister.

M-W 60, Norwood-Norfolk 14: A suffocating defense in the first quarter keyed a 19-2 run for the Jackets.

“We played pretty active in our defense. I believe this team is going to be pretty balanced offensively. It could be one guy hits 15-17 one night and another a different night. The key for us is going to be blocking out against Tupper. They have some good athletes and size”, said M-W coach Aaron Jones.

Aaron Armstrong took scoring honors for game one as he finished with 11 points, four assists and four steals as a sophomore. Jacob Barney, a senior, logged 10 points, four assists and three steals while Zach Brock, a senior, tallied 10 points. Junior Austin Lanning added four points and seven boards while sophomore David Odenhal posted six points, five assist and three steals. Senior Maurice Rease posted seven points. Junior Luke Miller added five points including a three while junior Brandon Vice chipped in three points, Senior TJ Gagnon (two points), senior Alex Hammond (two points). Junior Harrison VanBuren, junior Dakota Matthie, and junior Michael Thew round out the 2013-14 Jackets this season.

No player scored three points or more for the Flyers.

The Heuvelton JV’s knocked off Madrid-Waddington 57-44 and the two teams will play again on Thursday as both Tupper Lake and Norwood-Norfolk have no JV team this season. Ben Jacobs tossed in 18, Andrew Woodward scored 10, Jesse Cote scored nine and Cole Piercey added six for Heuvelton.

John Lenney exploded for 23 for M-W. Gabri added seven.
