A Brasher Falls man was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court, Syracuse, to three months in jail for stealing prescription medicine while working as a contractor at the Watertown Post Office.

Wayne A. Davis, 52, was also sentenced to three months’ home detention and ordered to undergo two additional years of supervision beyond that after a July 11 guilty plea to theft of United States mail. He was additionally ordered to perform 50 hours of community service.

According to court documents, Mr. Davis was employed as an independent contractor through Pony Express to deliver mail for the U.S. Postal Service. During his employment, he opened packages sent by the Veteran’s Administration to see if they contained pain-killing drugs. On Sept. 12, 2012, Mr. Davis found that one of the packages placed on his truck at the Watertown Post Office contained hydrocodone intended for a VA patient. He subsequently stole the drug from the package.

According to a sentencing memorandum filed by his attorney, Mr. Davis suffered a debilitating injury when he was crushed between two pieces of heavy equipment while working for the village of Massena in 2006. The injury went untreated, leaving Mr. Davis in constant pain, according to the memorandum. When he took the stolen hydrocodone “he felt pain free for the first time in years,” his attorney wrote to the court.
