Morristown Thanksgiving Dinner raises $1,300 for area charities

MORRISTOWN - Roughly 175 people turned out on Thanksgiving Day to the annual community dinner held at the Morristown Fire Hall to celebrate the holiday all together.

“If we helped one person who didn’t have to eat alone then it’s good,” Peter A. Paquette, one of the organizers of the event, said.

Twenty-five people who were not able to make it to the fire hall also received a meal at home.

The annual meal, which is hosted free of charge by the Morristown Volunteer Fire Department, was started four years ago in order to foster community spirit.

At that time Mary M. Paquette, who initiated the event, said she wanted a place for people to get together even if they didn’t have family locally.

This past year saw 31 turkeys cooked up for the meal – four more than in 2012 – and volunteers were in the fire hall’s kitchen the day before and the morning of Thanksgiving getting all the food ready.

The Morristown Central School Honor Society also helped out by setting up and decorating the fire hall for the meal.

Although the meal is not a charity dinner, guests were encouraged to make a cash donation or bring non-perishable food items for the Hammond Food Pantry.

This year attendees raised roughly $1,300, which is being split evenly between the food pantry and the Morristown and Brier Hill Fire Departments, and an estimated 500 pounds of food.

Both the Morristown and Brier Hill Fire Departments are putting the money towards their annual Christmas celebrations for local children.

“It worked out well,” Mr. Paquette said of the meal and the fundraising.
