Potsdam’s Red Cross Club adopts platoon led by local graduate


POTSDAM - Each year the Potsdam High School Red Cross Club adopts a platoon to send care packages to during the holiday season.

The club adopted a platoon from Fort Drum last year, but this year the project is hitting a little closer to home, as one of the officers in this year’s adopted platoon is a Potsdam High School graduate.

Faculty advisor Joe Van Ells said he was approached by Kevin Lambert, a former student of his who graduated from Potsdam High School in 2008, late last year about possibly having the club adopt his platoon.

“He came by at the end of the school year and asked me about this,” Mr. Van Ells said, explaining the platoon left ofr Afghanistan in July and will be stationed there until next summer.

“They’re going to be there for 12 months,” he said. “Obviously, they’ll be away from their families for the holidays.”

Mr. Van Ells said he remembers Mr. Lambert as a good student.“He’s a great guy. I definitely can’t say anything bad about him.”

The club is requesting all donation be dropped off at the school before Dec. 10, as they would like to ensure the package arrives before Christmas.

Items requested include toiletires such as anti-bacterial wipes, baby oil, baby powder. body wash and soap, Chapstick, contact lens cleaner, dental floss, deodoerant, foot powder, hand/body lotion, mouthwash, baby wipes, q-tips, shampoo, suncreen, toenail/fngernail clippers, tooth paste and toothbrush.

Snacks and beverages such as beef jerky/beef sticks, summer sausage, cheese spreads, dry cereal, Chex mix, chips, cookies, crackers, Doritos, dried fruit, energy bars, cereal bars, granola bars, gum, hard candy, nuts, pudding cups, and podwered single drink mixes such as Crystal Light, Gatorade, Juice Boxes, Kool-Aid and Propel may also be contributed.

Other miscellaneous items such as phone cards, magazines, books, movies, comic books, travel size games, playing cards, black and blue pens, notebooks, envelopes, crossword puzzle, word search and suduku books, batteries, Nerf balls, sewing kits, Zip lock bags and Tupperware style containers for sealing leftovers and other personal items are also being sought.

There is a donation box located inside the main office at the high school and members of the public are invited to contribute to the effort.
