Mrs. Rita Alma Durham O’Connor age 95 of Potsdam, NY passed away on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at the United Helpers Maplewood Campus in Canton, N.Y. Funeral services for Rita will be held on December 13, 2013 at 11 am at the Garner Funeral Service with Msgr. Robert Aucoin celebrant. Burial will take place in the spring at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Potsdam. Friends may call at the Garner Funeral Service on Friday from 10am until the time of the service. Contributions in her memory can be made to the Hospice and Palliative Care of the St. Lawrence Valley. Online condolences can be sent

Rita is survived by her son Jon (Dora) Durham of Penn Yan, NY; 3 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her first husband Clifford Durham; her second husband John B. “Jack” O’Connor; two sons Anthony and Mitchell Durham; sisters Beatrice Nichols and Blanche Hughes and brothers Leo and Emory Bertrand.

Rita was born on March 12, 1918 in Malone, NY to the late Emory Bertrand and Ida LaMay. She attended Malone schools. In 1937 in Malone, NY she was married to Clifford Durham. He died in August of 1968. She was then married to John B. “Jack” O’Connor in 1970. He died in 1990.

In 1953 she started the Penny Saver. She operated the business in the Potsdam area for many years. Rita also worked as a secretary at Potsdam State for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church and enjoyed quilting. She also volunteered for the Canton Potsdam Hospital and for Hospice for many years.
