The Rock Island Lighthouse State Park was picked Thursday for a State Historic Preservation Award by the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
The site was selected after it received many improvements by the offices Thousand Islands region branch. Among the work done at the site was the restoration of the keepers house, refurbishment of main floor and second floor, and full opening of the park in June. A new Friends of Rock Island Lighthouse also was created.
Other sites that received the award Thursday are the Buffalo Neighborhood Preservation Initiative, USS Slater and the Destroyer Escort Historical Museum, Albany, City Pier A and the Hugh L. Carey Battery Park City Authority, New York City, Rochester Free Academy, 13 S. Fitzhugh St., and the Williamsburgh Savings Bank, Brooklyn.
