Laura A. Foster was named Wednesday as executive director of the Frederic Remington Art Museum, 303 Washington St.
Ms. Foster, the museums curator since 1989, has held the executive directors position in an interim capacity since April. She replaced Edward A. LaVarnway, who retired.
The museums board of trustees voted unanimously in favor of Ms. Fosters appointment at its meeting Wednesday.
Ms. Fosters annual salary will be $69,000. She will retain her curator duties.
The trustees of the museum are very happy to finalize the appointment of Laura as executive director, William M. Cavanaugh, president of the board, said Thursday. Laura brings a lot of experience and enthusiasm to the table. She shares the boards vision for excellence and we are all looking forward to working with her.
Board Vice President Kathleen R. Wade agreed.
I think were very fortunate to have Laura, she said. I have nothing but positive things to say about her.
Ms. Foster said she was pleased with how she has been able to take on her new responsibilities, especially administration, finance and budgeting, development planning and public relations.
Im really happy with my development as an administrator, she said, adding that she also had the benefit of a closer and closer relationship with my mentors on the board.
The transition, she added, has been a pleasantly surprising one.
I am surprised at how much I love this work, Ms. Foster said. Its been so interesting to see the museums operation from the executive director position. Im amazed at all Ive learned and am especially thankful to the museums trustees and staff who have developed a new level of teamwork and been incredibly helpful to me as we move forward together.
Ms. Foster, 47, is a native of Potsdam and a resident of Canton.
She was one of 24 candidates for the job.
