New York State tax credit form IT-214, Claim for Real Property Tax Credit for howmeowners and renters, needs to be revised. As it stands today, you do not qualify for this credit if you pay more than $450 a month rent, regardless of your income.
Many low-income people are spending more than this for rent and have to sacrifice other needs. Granted, most can qualify for food stamps and Medicaid, but they still have other expenses such as personal hygiene products, clothing and transportation.
If a person is not able to attain subsidized housing, I am sure that there are very few apartments available for less than $450 per month. It is time for the credit limit to be increased.
