Massena boys down Gouverneur in hoops season opener

MASSENA - The Massena Central boys basketball team opened the 2013-14 season by pulling away to a 69-25 NAC Central Division win at home over Gouverneur on Friday.

Senior Dante Viskovich anchored a balanced Raider offense with 18 points while Logan Deshane and Tyler Haas tallied nine points. Xavier Viskovich and Rhoades Tarbell chipped in eight points each. Bailey LaBarge netted another seven and Dan Wing accounted for the other two as the Raiders outscored the Wildcats 16-4 to take a 29-13 lead into halftime then broke the game open with a 21-2 fourth-quarter surge.

Curt LaPlante paced Gouverneur with 10 points.

The Raiders return to action on Monday on the road against Central Division rival Salmon River.

OTHER GAMES

At the North Country Tip-off tournament hosted by Franklin Academy, the Huskies advanced to the title game via a 67-18 win over Saranac Lake and will take on Chateaugay which outscored East Division rival Brushton-Moira 49-39. At the Harrisville Tournament, Watertown IHC outscored Regiopolis-Notre Dame 68-33 and Harrisville beat Edwards-Knox 61-42.

The lone West Division game of the night saw Heuvelton drop Clifton-Fine 50-23 while OFA suffered a 66-63 non-league setback on the road to Albany Academy.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

In NAC girls basketball matchups on Friday; Salmon River gained a 58-14 Central Division win at home over Potsdam and St. Regis Falls outlasted East Division rival Tupper Lake 30-20 while West Division action saw Hammond beat Edwards-Knox 77-31 and Hermon-DeKalb drop Lisbon 70-51. Non-league games had OFA beating Plattsburgh High 43-25 and Saranac outscoring Canton 62-57.

Salmon River 58, Potsdam 14: In Fort Covington, Wiio King and Taylor Francis netted 14 points each in the winning effort.

Kelsey DiTullio paced the Lady Sandstoners with eight points.
