POTSDAM — Some holiday shoppers decide to get their purchases made on Black Friday, while others choose to cash in on last-minute deals the week before Christmas.

But plenty of purchases can be made and activities enjoyed this weekend in Potsdam as part of the annual Holiday Shopping Weekend.

The festivities will run all day today and will continue Sunday, with more than two dozen businesses scheduled to participate.

“The first weekend in December has traditionally been the big shopping weekend here in Potsdam,” Potsdam Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marylee E. Ballou said. “We try to get people to shop locally before the big shopping Saturday that will be happening soon. For the most part, since we have some specialty shops here, there are a lot of things you can find here that you wouldn’t find elsewhere.”

Some of this weekend’s participating businesses also took part in last weekend’s “Small Business Saturday.”

A handful of businesses will have extended store hours this weekend, including Northern Music and Video, which will have its “Super Music Sunday Sale.”

The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce will be offering chamber gift certificates at the various businesses.

“The chamber sponsors a gift certificate give away. We give away $100 in chamber certificates and also $50 gift certificates. They are good in over 130 businesses in Potsdam,” Ms. Ballou said. “Places like the Cornerstore and the Misty Hollow offer great products and service. We do have some new businesses like Main Street Chocolates and Chilly Delight frozen yogurt participating this year.”

Main Street Chocolates, 4 Main St., opened on Nov. 12, while Chilly Delight premiered on Nov. 22 at 57 Market St.

The Holiday Shopping Weekend coincides with a few other events around town.

The lighting of the Robert Plumb Memorial Tree will be held at 6 p.m. today next to the Clarkson Inn. On Sunday, the Potsdam Museum will have an open house and memorial tree lighting, with the “Toyland: A Century of Fun!” exhibit opening at that time as well. The exhibit explores 100 years of toys.

The fourth annual “Merry Tuba Christmas” concert will be from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at the United Methodist Church. The concerts are in their 40th year and are performed throughout the country.
