Canton appoints dean of students for high school

CANTON — A science teacher has been appointed to serve as dean of students at Canton Central’s Hugh C. Williams High School effective Jan. 6, when Principal Mark T. Passamonte leaves for his new job.

Henry “Doug” Dominy was approved by the school board Thursday evening to serve as dean of students until he is certified to serve as a building administrator.

The state Education Department is expected to approve the certification early in 2014 after Mr. Dominy completes his administrative studies at St. Lawrence University.

At that point, School Superintendent William A. Gregory said he will recommend that Mr. Dominy serve as interim high school principal for the rest of this school year.

“As a veteran teacher and coach, Doug is well known to the majority of our faculty, staff and students as well as may of our parents throughout the district,” Mr. Gregory said.

Besides his teaching experience at Canton Central, Mr. Dominy has served as assistant school principal for the regional summer school held at Massena Central School.

As dean of students, Mr. Dominy will be responsible for running most of the daily operations of the high school.

The district plans to hire a long-term substitute to teach Mr. Dominy’s classes for the rest of the school year, including seventh-grade science and one high school Earth Science class.

Until he receives his administrative certification, he is not allowed to handle some administrative duties including student placement decisions, teacher evaluations, student suspensions and staff personnel actions. Those will temporarily be handled by the district’s other administrators.

During budget cuts two years ago, the district eliminated its dean of students position.

Mr. Dominy will receive his teaching salary and an additional $2,400 stipend for his role of dean of students.

Mr. Passamonte is leaving the district to start his new job at Shoreham-Wading River Central School District in Shoreham, Long Island. He was hired to serve as that district’s director of health, physical education and athletics.
