Potsdam man pleads not guilty to harassing child at hockey practice

POTSDAM — The Potsdam man accused of yelling at and kicking the skates of a 10-year-old boy during a youth hockey practice last month pleaded not guilty to a harassment charge in Potsdam Village Court Friday morning.

Village police charged Christopher J. Martin, 40, of 19 Chestnut St., Potsdam, with the violation on Nov. 30 following an investigation into the incident that allegedly took place Nov. 23 at Pine Street Arena.

Mr. Martin, who was a spectator at the practice, is accused of harassing the skater after the boy stopped quickly and sprayed ice chips at his sister and another girl standing in a doorway of the rink.

The boy’s mother, Tracy L. Hoose, Colton, in a police statement said Mr. Martin told her he was upset because her son’s horseplay could have hurt the girls.

Mr. Martin declined comment after the court hearing Monday. However, in a closed door conference with the assistant district attorney Lloyd G. Grandy he could be heard saying he regretted his actions.

“I’m not proud,” Mr. Martin could be heard telling the ADA. “It was not my intention to menace this child.”

After the conference Mr. Grandy said he took no action toward making a plea deal with Mr. Martin, adding that he faces the possibility of fines fees and 15 days in St. Lawrence County jail as a penalty for his charge.

Mr. Martin was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to appear Jan. 24 in Potsdam Village Court.
