H-D, Hammond win NAC West openers


DEKALB JUNCTION - Hermon-DeKalb’s first test of the NAC Girls Basketball season was everything coach Steve Morrill wanted and more.

Event though, the Demons came out 70-51 winners over Lisbon, the effort by the Golden Knights didn’t come unnoticed on Friday evening.

Defending NAC West and Section 10 Class D Champion Hammond (2-0) opened divisional play with an outstanding shooting display netting 12 threes in a 78-33 win over Edwards-Knox.

H-D 70, Lisbon 51: “Lisbon played extremely well and defensively they made us work. There wasn’t many baskets that were unchallenged. During that first half, we didn’t play to our potential. In the second half, we switched the defense up to a zone and we attacked the basket better and finished,” said Morrill after his 1-0 Demons expanded a 31-25 lead with a 25-9 third quarter run,

Hunter Hitchman scored 15 of her 24 points in the second half. Courtney Harrington delivered 14 points in the interior while Bridget Rust stroked two threes for 10 points. Morgan Stott added 10 and Kasey O’Donnell added eight. Chelsey MacKay and Delaney Kerr rebounded well off the bench.

Jackie Sovie delivered a season high 20 points for Lisbon. Maddie Vine tossed in 13 with three threes. Alex Amo added two threes for six points while Beth Crowley hit a three in a six point effort.

“It was such an intense and well played game tonight by us,” said LCS coach Dick Marcellus. “Even though we were on the short end, I couldn’t be happier of our effort, poise, and progression as basketball players. If we keep this effort up and get a little better at some aspects of the game and I believe we will be where we want to be at the end of it all. Honestly, it was one of the best girls games I have seen in a really long time and it was great to be a part of it.”

In the junior varsity game, Hermon-DeKalb won over Lisbon, 36-16. Zarina Hernandez scored 10 points, Kelsi Shippee tossed in nine and Breanna Harrington tallied all eight of her points in the third quarter to lift H-D.

Sierra Dobbs scored six and Claire Donaldson added five for Lisbon.

Hammond 78, E-K 33: The guard tandem Mikayla Horton (31 points, 5 3s, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 8 steals) and Courtney Bova (31 points, 6 3s, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 8 steals) both approached triple doubles as they combined for 19 and 31 points and 11 of 12 Devil threes.

Horton buried three trifectas in the first quarter and Bova buried five threes in the first half and netted five of five free throws. Ally Crosby (6 points, 4 steals) and Cassi Whalen (5 points) combined for 14 and 12 rebounds and Paige Frisina (7 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds, 6 steals) turned in a multi-faceted contribution, Taylor Bowman hit a three scoring five points and Emily Bush added two free throws.

“Overall we executed very well tonight. Our objective was just outwork Edwards-Knox the best we could,” said Hammond Coach Shawn Dack.

The Hammond JVs prevailed 46-32.


Salmon River won 58-14 over Potsdam powered by 14 points, 13 rebounds, five assists and three steals from Wiio King and 14 points, nine rebounds, four steals and four assists from Taylor Francis.

Canton lost 62-57 to Saranac as Kayla Napper poured in a game-high 25 points for winners. Kaili Frank scored 12 and Rachel Sanderson added 14 for Canton. St. Regis Falls beat Tupper Lake on the road 30-20.
