Ogdensburg DPW getting a new vacuum truck.

The Ogdensburg Department of Public Works is about to get a new work horse for its motor pool.

The department will spend $356,666 on a vactor/vacuum truck. The new vehicle will replace one that has been in use since summer 1999.

“It’s at the end of its expected usefulness,” said Supervisor Gregg Harland.

The vactor/vacuum truck is responsible for routine maintenance of the city’s underground sewer mains and catch basins. It is also used for what Mr. Harland calls “soft excavations,” replacing a front-end loader when digging around underground power lines that are susceptible to accidental punctures.

It has been a busy vehicle. By Mr. Harland’s calculations of 33 miles of use per hour, the vactor/vacuum truck has logged 280,000 miles in 8,500 hours.

The new vehicle will be built to specifications through a Rochester heavy equipment dealer and will be delivered to the city next spring.

“It takes five or six months to build,” Mr. Harland said.

In addition to the vactor/vacuum truck, the public works motor pool consists of 12 dump trucks, three front end loaders, four backhoes, six pickup trucks and four plow/sander combination trucks.
