Canton resident plans sports equipment exchange operation

CANTON - A village resident is seeking a special permit that would allow him to operate a sports equipment exchange in the garage next to his home at 6 Fisher St.

From hockey skates to golf clubs, William B. Bascom said he hopes to offer a range of items in a variety of sports for those looking to buy used equipment.

“I want to be a resource for people,” Mr. Bascom said. “I’m sure there’s a lot of people who have basements and garages filled with equipment.”

The community no longer offers the sports equipment exchange held in years past at the Canton Recreational Pavilion.

“I just felt there was a need for this,” the Canton native said.

Mr. Bascom, a father of three, works full-time as the equipment manager for the sports teams at St. Lawrence University. The sports exchange would be open when he’s available at home or by appointment. As a sideline, he also sharpens hockey and ice skates in his garage and coaches high school lacrosse at Canton Central.

The village Planning Board will review his special permit request at a public hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. this evening in the municipal building, 60 Main St.

Codes Enforcement Officer Russell Lawrence IV said Fisher Street is in a residential zone that allows home occupations as long as a special permit is obtained.

The Planning Board has already reviewed the proposal and will be expected to decide this evening whether to issue the permit. Letters from the village were mailed to notify neighbors about the public hearing.

Mr. Bascom said he has four to five parking spaces available in his driveway and he doesn’t anticipate the sports exchange will create a great deal of additional traffic on his street. He plans to call the operation Bulldog Exchange.
