CARTHAGE — The village Board of Trustees will inform the state that due to the lack of parking downtown, the village is not in favor of giving up parking spaces.

Following a safety investigation of the Carthage-West Carthage highway corridor, the state Department of Transportation is recommending the elimination of two parking spaces near 258 State St.

According to the DOT safety evaluation, there have been a cluster of rear-end accidents at the pedestrian crossing near that spot. The report noted that poor visibility for drivers and pedestrians was caused by vehicles parked near that cross walk. The report listed six accidents over three years there, one involving injury to a pedestrian.

To remedy the poor visibility, the DOT suggested the elimination of two parking spaces, one on either side of the street.

Up the street, a request for a handicapped-parking space in front of United Community Church was denied by the village board due to limited on-street parking.

Concerns about clogging up parking in front of the post office and nearby funeral home were also voiced.

In other business at the Dec. 2 meeting, the board accepted a bid from Mark Connelly of Felts Mills to purchase the village’s four-wheel-drive 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. Mr. Connelly’s bid of $4,150 was the highest of 13 received.
