Lisbon to consider library wall upgrade

LISBON — The Lisbon Town Council will consider refurbishing the brick walls at the Hepburn Library when they meet on Wednesday evening.

“We’ve got to do that,” Town Councilor Alan D. Dailey said. “It’s in really bad shape.”

Mr. Dailey suggested the project during November’s council meeting and said he plans to make a motion at the next meeting.

“It’s one of the more pressing things” in the town, he said. “It’s our responsibility to keep it up at any cost.”

Library Director Michelle A. McLagan said, “It’s something we’ve been talking about for a couple of years.”

The building, which is roughly 94 years old, is showing its age, Ms. McLagan said.

Ms. McLagan said the exterior of the mortar joints need to be retouched in order to combat the effects of decades of weathering.

In 2012 the library was fitted with a new door, which cost roughly $6,780, and Ms. McLagan expects work on the building’s brick walls to be significantly more expensive.

Ms. McLagan said she expects the project will cost anywhere from $50,000 to $60,000, but added that the library and the town would be seeking out state grants to help cover the cost. The project, if approved by the town council, could begin as early as the summer of 2014, Ms. McLagan said.

Mr. Dailey said he is going to recommend the town use some of the $125,000 it received for the sale of a 23.1-acre plot of land at Sparrow Hawk Point in September to pay for the project.
