Canton resident plans sports equipment exchange operation

CANTON - A village resident received the green light Tuesday night to open a sports equipment exchange in the garage next to his home at 6 Fisher St.

The village Planning Board agreed to grant a special permit to William B. Bascom on the condition that he encourage his customers to enter Fisher Street from Harrison Street, which is wider than the other two street entrances.

Mr. Bascom who hopes to offer a range of items in a variety of sports for those looking to sell or buy used equipment on a cosignment basis. The busines will be called Barndog Exchange.

“I want to be a resource for people,” Mr. Bascom said. “I’m sure there’s a lot of people who have basements and garages filled with equipment.”

Planning board Chair Tim Danehy said he was contacted by one neighbor who was concerned about a potential increase in traffic, but no residents attended Tuesday night’s public hearing.

“We came to the conclusion that this would not create a lot of traffic,” Mr. Danehy said. “Hopefully, this takes off to a point where you need a bigger space.”

The community no longer offers the sports equipment exchange held in years past at the Canton Recreational Pavilion.

“I just felt there was a need for this,” the Canton native said.

Mr. Bascom, a father of three, works full-time as the equipment manager for the sports teams at St. Lawrence University. The sports exchange would be open when he’s available at home or by appointment. As a sideline, he also sharpens hockey and ice skates in his garage and coaches high school lacrosse at Canton Central.

Codes Enforcement Officer Russell Lawrence IV said Fisher Street is in a residential zone that allows home occupations as long as a special permit is obtained.
