Massena wrestlers drop Canton in NAC season opener

CANTON - After an encouraging fourth-place effort this past Saturday at a tournament hosted by Ciceron-North Syracuse, the Massena Central varsity wrestling team opened the 2013-14 NAC season with an impressive 68-18 decision on the road over Canton on Tuesday at Jerry Hourihan Gym.

“We have a real good group this year,” noted coach Scott Perrine after the win over the Bears in which the Raiders logged eight pins. “We got the season off to a good start in Syracuse and we wrestled pretty well again tonight.”

In Tuesday’s meet, Massena took early control with three pins in a forfeit in the first four weights. Austin Amo set the tone for the meet by pinning Carl Hayes in 38 seconds at 145 pounds. Quinton Colter followed by working his way to a pin over Justin Foster with just 29 seconds left in the 152-pound matchup. Dan Elman then scored a forfeit win at 160 pounds before Hunter Perrine won at 170 pounds by pinning Jared Cascanatta midway through the final round.

The Bears got on the board when Alan Clement pinned Alex Romeo in 52 seconds at 182 pounds. After Massena’s Jacob Stiles won by forfeit at 195 pounds, Thomas Lumbard posted the other pin of the night for Canton when he finished off Dakota Bernard at 1:27 of the 220-pound bout.

The Raiders went on to win all but one of the final eight weights starting at 285 where Nolan Terrance pinned Zachary Rottier in 1:05. Brian Plourde then followed with the swiftest pin of the meet when he touched Hunter Desantis’ shoulders to the mat in just eight seconds at 99 pounds.

Steven Degray’s forfeit win at 103 pounds closed out the scoring for Canton before the first match to go the distance saw Nathan Marshall outscore Ryan Brown 10-2 at 113 pounds. Skyler Cameron then pinned Chaz Agen in 38 seconds at 120 pounds and Alec Denney gained a 15-1 decision over Jon Fetcie at 126 pounds. The Raiders closed out the meet with pins as Michael Brown stopped Zach McDonald in 21 seconds at 132 pounds and Jesse Patraw halted Zane Atchie at the 2:21 mark at 138 pounds.

The Raiders return to action on Thursday when they make their home debut against OFA starting with the modified and JV matches at 6 p.m.

In placing fourth at the Cicero-NS Anderson Tournament, Terrance wrestled his way to the top at 285 pounds and Nathan Marshall claimed the tournament title at 113 pounds while Perrine was the runner-up at 160 pounds.

The lone other NAC meet on Tuesday saw Gouverneur overpower Franklin Academy 78-6.
