Canton Main Street printing business closing

CANTON — A downtown business that offers custom printing for sports team apparel is scheduled to close Christmas Eve.

Rusty D. Gotham, owner of The Edge, 103 Main St., said after nearly three years in business he decided to close his Canton store and return to running his business out of his Russell home.

Mr. Gotham said a lack of large printing orders from Canton organizations, including the local youth sports association and school sports teams, hurt his ability to prosper in Canton.

Despite offering lower prices than competitors, Mr. Gotham said, larger printing orders often went to other printing businesses, some of them non-local. He noted that he is a Canton native and graduated from Canton Central School.

“There’s a lot of politics in Canton that gets in the way of business,” said Mr. Gotham. “I feel I was treated unfairly in Canton.”

Two years ago, when Canton Central was faced with state funding cuts, he said he printed more than 300 “Save Our School” T-shirts and sold them at a greatly reduced price.

“Basically, I supported Canton, but they didn’t support me,” he said.

The 1,900-square-foot corner building is owned by Richard and Julie Grayson and housed Chuck’s Pet Store before The Edge opened in February 2011.

Mr. Gotham said he’s received some business from sororities and fraternities affiliated with area colleges and universities, but needed larger printing orders to maintain a downtown presence.

Neighboring communities including Potsdam, Madrid and Ogdensburg have provided some business, he said.

Besides customized printing for T-shirts and other sports apparel, the store offers a customized glass-etching service for glassware and decorative items.

To reduce inventory, remaining stock will be sold at half price or at cost through Dec. 24. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Remaining merchandise includes T-shirts, shorts, sweatpants, hoody sweatshirts and other clothing items.

He will still be taking printing orders and using his digital printing machine at home once the store closes.

The business’s website is and its phone numbers are 347-3152 and 854-8070.
