POTSDAM - The Potsdam Chamber of Commerce hosted Potsdam’s fourth Merry Tubachristmas concert on Saturday.

Keith Shult, the conductor for this year’s concert, led 17 musicians in playing favorite holiday carols on their tubas, baritones, and euphoniums for a crowd of 100 listeners. Many of the musicians decorated their instruments in lights and garlands as well as their own heads with Tuba Christmas hats, and handmade unique Santa Hat creations.

MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS is celebrating its 40th Anniversary (1974-2013) this year. Created by the late Harvey Phillips, MERRY TUBACHRISTMAS 2013 concerts will be presented in over 250 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. Phillips was inspired to create TUBACHRISTMAS as an annual event honoring his teacher, the late great tubist William J. Bell (born Christmas Day, 1902).

The Potsdam concert raised just over $300 for the Potsdam Neighborhood Center this year. “We are very pleased with the results of this year’s concert,” said chamber Director Marylee Ballou. “We wish to thank Keith, the musicians, and the audience for making it such fun and successful event. We look forward to hosting our fifth concert in 2014. “
