Village reminds residents to remove basketball hoops and other objects from roadside

MASSENA - The village of Massena would like to remind residents to remove basketball hoops, as well as other objects they may have placed by the curb in front of their homes, as they can cause damage to village plows or be damaged during the process of snow removal.

“In the past and this year as well, this has caused damage to village plows during snow removal,” said Fire Department foreman Ken McGowan. “A resident can be fined along with paying for any damages to village equipment.”

According to section 246-18 of the village code, “No person shall erect, construct, or place or cause to be erected, constructed or placed any building or structure extending or projecting into or over any street in said village.”

Mr. McGowan said in accordance with village code people cited for this violation may face fines of up to $25 per day for each day the object remains in place following an official request to remove the object.

“The fire/code department will be enforcing these codes this winter,” he said.
