The Jefferson County Local Development Corp. manufacturing council has released a video on DVD to promote interest in manufacturing and skilled trades among high school students.

The video can be viewed at http://wdt.me/7H5UFB (three-minute version) or http://wdt.me/8282zS (10-minute version). The 10-minute DVD produced by Quality Production Inc. targets youths in grades eight through 10 who may be interested in pursuing manufacturing careers. It features interviews with local workers about their careers in today’s modern manufacturing climate. A junior at Indian River High School, Philadelphia, Misty L. Brown, narrates the video and shares facts about career opportunities in manufacturing. The average salary of a manufacturing worker in Jefferson County, for example, is about $56,000.

“In our local outreach, manufacturers frequently note concern not only in filling current vacancies, but in losing existing skilled workers to retirement over the next five years or so,” said David J. Zembiec, JCLDC deputy CEO. “When you think about who will be entering the workforce in five years, you’re looking at today’s eighth-grader.”

Copies of the DVD will be sent to schools in Jefferson and Lewis counties for use in classrooms and career events, and it will be posted on several other websites.

The video also will be posted on JCLDC, Jefferson-Lewis Board of Cooperative Educational Services and Workforce Investment Board websites.
