COLTON - With winter weather descending upon the north country, the town of Colton has installed its ice rink in the Pavilion at Swift Field off Sugar Bush Lane in the hamlet of South Colton.

Earlier this year a new portable ice rink system and ice skates were purchased by the town with a grant received by the Health Initiative’s Creating Healthy Places St. Lawrence County Project. One of the aims of the Creating Healthy Places Project, funded by the New York State Department of Health, is to increase the availability of places to be physically active.

On behalf of the entire Department of Public Works (DPW) crew, Superintendent Darren Richards said, “Working with Karen Bage on the grant enabled the town to purchase the new liner and kick plates for the portable ice rink. The Porta-Rinx system was produced by Damian J. Products in Vermont, and we are grateful for the attention given us by Damian Renzello, who traveled from East Montpelier to help with our first rink installation. Through the grant and other resources, we also have made other investments including basketball backboards, which are up at the pavilion and ready for use next year.”

The investments have attracted the attention of others, including some anonymous contributors, who are enabling the town to purchase a pull-behind ice re-surfacing machine called The Bambini also produced by Damian J. Products.

These improvements are making it possible for a new Recreation Committee chaired by Kevin LaMora to organize a broomball league for teams to begin playing games at the Pavilion after the New Year’s holiday.

The town also has been raising funds for the Recreation Program through a Pavilion Ad Campaign. Before the rink was installed, Mr. Richards said, “Ads purchased by 26 sponsors were professionally produced by Northeastern Sign for us to install. The entire DPW crew sincerely appreciates the assistance of Northeastern Sign staff and the support of sponsors. We are very impressed with the improvements and want to publicly acknowledge and thank the ad sponsors at this time.”

Ads from the following sponsors, in alphabetical order, can now be seen at the town’s Pavilion: Amvets Post 262, Brookfield Renewable Energy, Buck Funeral Home, Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Catamount Lodge & Forest, Christian Science Reading Room & Bookstore, Colton Massage Therapy, Colton-Pierrepont PTSA, Colton-Pierrepont Teachers’ Association, Cynthia Hennessy (in memory of Timothy Hennessy), Daily Courier-Observer, Gray & Gray CPAs, Graymont, Higley Association, MVP Sports, North Country Savings Bank, Northeastern Sign, Potsdam Agway, S&L Electric, Seaway Timber Harvesting, Seaway Valley Prevention Council (three ads focusing on office and specific topics), Town of Colton, St. Lawrence Health Initiative, and White’s General Store.

The town’s Tourism & Beautification Committee was enlisted to help with the Pavilion Ad Campaign. Committee Chair Ruth McWilliams noted, “We had a flurry of requests before Thanksgiving and Northeastern Sign got camera-ready copy from most sponsors in time to produce the ads before the rink was installed. An ad from Moser’s Custom Trim Shop in Massena will be one of the first to be installed in the spring after the ice rink is removed.”

During the winter, Northeastern Sign will be working on Moser’s ad and any others that come in. There is still room for at least 16 more full-size ads. Anyone interested in ordering either full- or half-size ads should contact Scott Muller (315-244-9956) with the town’s Tourism & Beautification Committee to learn more about ad sizes, prices, and the process for purchasing the impact-resistant ads being displayed for three years.
