Clarkson women face RIT in outdoor game this Saturday


POTSDAM - Following a split with 4th/5th-ranked University of North Dakota, the 6th/7th-ranked Clarkson University women’s hockey team will wrap up the fall-semester schedule with a trip to take on the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers in an outdoor game at Frontier Field on Saturday at 12:05 pm.

The sixth outdoor game in the history of NCAA women’s hockey will be aired live on Time Warner Cable Sports Channel 26.

Led by co-head coaches Matt and Shannon Desrosiers, and assistant coach Matt Kelly, the Golden Knights now stand at 13-4-2 (5-2-1 ECAC Hockey), and sit in fifth place in the conference, four points behind Harvard. with one game in hand on the Crimson.

In a matchup with two of the top teams in the nation, Clarkson and North Dakota split a pair of 2-1 games. at Cheel Arena. UND took the first game on Friday afternoon before the Golden Knights came back to take game two on Saturday behind two goals from senior Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, ONT).

Rattray now stands five points back of setting the all-time points record at Clarkson. Her first goal in Saturday’s win came 23 seconds after the opening faceoff, while her game-winner put the Green and Gold up 2-0 at the time in the second period. Senior captain Carly Mercer (Exeter, ONT) recorded two assists on the weekend.

Rattray is seventh in the country in scoring with 29 points on 14 goals and 15 assists. She has 144 career points (62-82) in 125 games, and trails only Britney Selina ‘10 (148 pts) on the Knights’ all-time scoring list.

Sophomore Erin Ambrose (Keswick, ONT) leads the nation in points per game for defensemen with 1.21 per game on nine goals and 14 assists in 19 games. She is also tied for best in the country with five power-play goals.

Senior goaltender Erica Howe (Ottawa, ONT) impressed once against last weekend, and now leads the country in shutouts with seven and is second in the nation in goals-against average, allowing only 1.06 goals per contest. The first goal she allowed last Friday ended a streak of 196:36 scoreless minutes, dating back to a game against Providence College on November 15th.

Clarkson currently sits in the top four in both scoring offense and scoring defense, and the Knights’ penalty killing unit is second in the country, killing off 92.5% of all power-play opportunities for opponents.

A balanced scoring attack led the Knights by the Tigers in the opening game of the season by the score of 12-1 on September 29 in Potsdam. Ambrose recorded a hat trick and two assists, while senior Brittany Styner (Calgary, ALB) recorded three assists. Ten different Clarkson players scored goals in the season-opening win and 14 Knights recorded at least one point as the Green and Gold set a school-record for most goals scored in a game.

RIT, out of the College Hockey America conference, enters the game with an overall record of 9-9-1, and is 1-3 against ECAC Hockey teams this season. Kourtney Kunichika leads the team in points with five goals and eight assists, and Ali Binnington has started 15 games in net, allowing 2.05 goals per game.

KNIGHT KNOTES: Clarkson has won five of its last six games, with its only loss since mid-November a one-goal setback to North Dakota last Friday … The Knights have outscored their opponents 66-21, including a 22-4 margin over the past six games … Clarkson has been especially dominant in the first period, outscoring the opposition 26-7 in the opening 20 minutes … The Knights are 13-0-2 when scoring first and 13-0 when leading through two periods … Clarkson has not allowed a power-play goal over the past six games … Jamie Lee Rattray is closing in on becoming the Green and Gold’s all-time leading scorer. She has career 144 points (62-82), five away from breaking the Clarkson record of 148. Rattray is six goals shy of breaking the Clarkson record for career goals and 17 assists away from becoming the Knights’ all-time leading playmaker … Clarkson’s all-time win leader in goal, Erica Howe has a career record of 72-31-12, including 22 shutouts. Two-time ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year, she boasts a .931 career save percentage and a 1.66 goals against average … Brittany Styner is Clarkson’s leading playmaker with 17 assists. Bidding to become the next Golden Knight to reached the coveted Century Mark, she has 85 career points (23-62), including 22 (5-17) this season.
