Louisville raises income limits for senior tax exemption

LOUISVILLE — The town board voted unanimously this week to increase the income guidelines used to determine whether seniors citizens are eligible for a 20 percent discount on their property tax bills.

Currently seniors making $17,700 or less qualify for the program. The town board voted to hike that income ceiling to $20,000.

Town Clerk Joanne Cameron said the change came at the suggestion of Town Assessor David A. Cassort.

“If we moved it to $20,000, there might be eight or nine people who become eligible,” she said, explaining that over the years — as social security payments have kept gradually increasing — several seniors have lost their eligibility.

And just because they’re receiving increased social security payments doesn’t mean they’re any better off, as Councilwoman Gail Schneider noted the price of Medicare, along with everything else, has also continued to increase.

“I don’t think eight people getting a 20 percent discount is going to hurt us, but it might really help them,” Councilman Daniel O’Keefe said.
