A driver crashed into a utility pole on Main Street early Thursday morning.

The accident happened in front of Basta’s Flower Shop, 619 Main St., shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.

City police said Mark A. Brossoit, 50, of 821 Main St., was ticketed for speed not reasonable and prudent, failure to keep right and leaving the scene of a property damage accident.

The car crossed the road before knocking down Christmas decorations, hitting a utility pole and finally resting on a “Basta’s Flowers & Gifts” sign, according to police.

Joseph M. Basta, owner of the shop, said he rushed over to his shop after a tenant who lives above the shop called him a few minutes later.

He noticed several planters, a wreath display and the shop’s pergola were damaged.

“We repaired what needed to be repaired and stabilized what needed to be stabilized,” he said. “But we aren’t going to be able to fix a lot of things until spring.”

Mr. Basta did not yet estimate the damage, but said it was “considerable.”
