Caps for Cancer founder happy to help chemo patients

In November 2007, a large mass was discovered in my right lung. While at SUNY Upstate University Hospital I remember seeing a man who had chemo asking for a hat, as he was so cold from the therapy and had lost his hair. The only one they had at the time was pink. I never forgot that man, so when I wanted to do something to comfort other cancer patients, I decided to make chemo caps. That was in 2009.

I developed Caps for Cancer, and with the help of more than 20 wonderful women in the north country, we have grown into a nonprofit charity that has provided more that 2,000 caps to oncology centers all over New York state, the Boston Hope Lodge and as far away as Little Rock, Ark., and Dallas, Texas.

Thanks to my husband and all these wonderful women, we have been able to not only supply the cancer treatment centers, but also sell caps, donating 100 percent of the proceeds, which amounted to more than $7,000.

Thank you, north country residents, for supporting our efforts and giving hope to the patients who are fighting cancer. For all this, I am grateful and give thanks.
