CARTHAGE The 2-year-old child of Wilhelmina Johnson, 42, Copenhagen, was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday night on County Route 45 in the town of Champion.
The infant, whose name was not released by state police, died at 8:48 p.m. at Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, after suffering massive trauma. Ms. Johnson, who also suffered head trauma, remained in critical condition at the Syracuse hospital, police said Saturday night.
Police arrived about 7:20 p.m. Friday at the collision scene, from which Ms. Johnson and her child were flown by a LifeNet helicopter to the Syracuse hospital. Brian Phillips, 42, Carthage, was treated at the scene and released with no injuries.
Troopers said Ms. Johnson was traveling northeast on County Route 45 in a 2007 Nissan Versa with the 2-year-old in the rear passenger seat. Mr. Phillips was traveling southwest in a Dodge pickup truck when Ms. Johnsons car left the south side of the roadway, overcorrected and drifted into Mr. Phillipss path in the oncoming lane. Police said Mr. Phillips took evasive actions but could not avoid the collision.
