Carthage Development Corp. moves forward with projects

CARTHAGE — The Carthage Industrial Development Corp. is moving forward with plans to develop the former Braman Manufacturing Co. property as low-income homes.

Following the October CIDC meeting, the corporation hired Aubertine and Currier Architects, Engineers & Land Surveyors PLLC of Watertown to work with the Thousand Islands Area Habitat for Humanity to develop a subdivision design for the property. CIDC board member John F. McHugh reported at Wednesday’s meeting that the engineering firm has completed a topographical map and the preliminary subdivision. He said the firm should be ready to go before the village Planning Board by mid-January. Mr. McHugh projected the village should be able to begin work on the infrastructure in the spring and “Habitat could be ready to go Sept. 1.”

“We continue to make progress,” he said.

CIDC President Robert E. Gormley said he had a “conceptional agreement” on a purchase option for the neighboring Moore property.

Mr. McHugh also reported to the board that it seemed it would be a “good year at the hydro plant.” He said the “water is flowing good” at the corporation’s hydroelectric plant on West End Avenue.

“Last quarter was the best on record,” he said.

CIDC representatives also are continuing work with the owners of the Kehoe and TLC Real Estate buildings at 253-255 State St. A Main Street project is planned for the properties through a Rural Area Revitalization Projects grant, which may be used to replace the roof and update the facades.
