THREE MILE BAY — State police are investigating whether the death of a 3-year-old girl Monday morning at her home is related to a 2011 assault that left her with brain damage, blindness and no control of her limbs.

Victoria Kathryn Nicole Marchyotti died at 6 a.m. at her home on Empie Road, where she lived with her adoptive parents, according to state police. Her parents, whose names were not released, called 911, but the child could not be resuscitated and was pronounced dead at the residence, police said.

Victoria, born Kate Cawvey, was assaulted March 18, 2011, by Kelly J. Keegan, now 34, of Chaumont. He was the boyfriend of the girl’s mother, Tayler E. Glass, and was baby-sitting the 11-month-old at the time. He was accused of shaking, slamming or throwing the infant and hitting her head on a hard surface, causing head trauma and injuries to both ears.

He was convicted in March 2012 of first-degree assault, two counts each of second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child and a single count each of reckless assault against a child and third-degree assault. He is serving a 25-year prison sentence.

State police are investigating whether the girl’s death is related to the injuries she suffered in the 2011 assault. The cause of death had not been determined Monday night.

“We are actively involved in an investigation,” state police Senior Investigator Michael C. Pastuf said Monday. “We are looking into what possible connections there are between today’s events and those in 2011.”

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department, district attorney’s office and medical examiner’s office also are part of the investigation.
