Sports a crucial part of youth development

Participation in youth sports or recreational activities is critical for children to develop in all aspects of physical, social and emotional health for both immediate benefits as well as forming a healthy lifestyle.

Starting sports at a young age can limit the early onset of diseases caused from obesity such as Type 2 diabetes, asthma, hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Not only do sports activities offer physical activities and an onset of a healthy lifestyle early on for the children but it also gives children a chance to get out and meet new friends and other families outside of the school setting.

Sports offer social development by offering children the chance to work in groups, learn how to effectively communicate and work with others and learn leadership qualities. Through sports children can easily learn unselfish qualities and become a team player.

Children are able to find life values, create character and establish self-worth through sports participation. A key example of a personal value that can be taught through sports is perseverance. Children are being taught certain skills and techniques at practices and need to practice these skills outside of practice to master them so when in a game it comes naturally. This quality can be carried on to later life jobs or goals we strive to accomplish.

Sports are also proven to increase the academic success of students because of the mental development of thinking tactically while giving the children a reason to excel in academics to be able to participate in the sports they love. So do your children a favor and offer them the opportunity to get involved in these positive activities that will contribute to a healthier life and a greater development during their childhood. Take chances to see what they may or may not be involved in because in the long run it is only benefitting them.
