Tool barn lost in Nefsey Road fire

WEST LOWVILLE — A tool barn on Nefsey Road burned despite efforts of neighbors to try to save it.

The fire was called in about 1 p.m. today by passersby who saw smoke and flames from routes 177 and 12.

The shed was engulfed by the time Lowville volunteer firefighters arrived.

James M. Martin, the county’s director of fire and emergency services, said the low temperatures can pose issues for firefighters, such as freezing valves.

At the scene, the temperature registered 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Before tanker trucks were called in from Copenhagen and Martinsburg departments, Amish neighbors worked to put out the flames.

The property is owned by Kenneth and Dawn Sweredoski.

The cause of the blaze is unknown, although it was possibly attributable to a wood stove, according to Mr. Martin.

Family members had been in the building earlier in the day, but no one was inside when the blaze broke out, he said.

There was insurance on the structure.
