MASSENA - Town council members were presented with a financial report from Massena Memorial Hospitals CSEA unit that outlined a financial picture far different than the one the hospital is presenting.
After having an opportunity to look over the report briefly prior to Wednesday nights town board meeting, Councilman John F. Macaulay said there were a few things that jumped out at him.
This paper says one thing, and this paper says one thing, he said, holding copies of both reports. I dont know if this one is any good or if this one is any good.
Councilman Albert N. Nicola said he was concerned by the discrepancies in the two reports.
This has to be brought to someones attention, he said.
Giving just one example of the discrepancies, Mr. Macaulay looked at the hospitals report, which noted that at the end of 2011 they had $12,370,453 in cash on hand.
However, the report presented to the town by the CSEA reported the hospital had a total fund balance of $34,777,442, with $18,776,000 of that being unrestricted.
Mr. Nicola said before deciding which report was a true reflection of the hospitals financial status, he had a question.
You would want to know where those figures came from, he said, referring to the CSEA report.
Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray, said he was going to speak to hospital officials about the two reports.
We need to speak to the hospital directly and ask, Why dont these numbers jive? he said.
Mr. Macaulay said he appreciated seeing the report and was hopeful that the CSEA could also present the board, at some point, with a report that outlined how much money their various cost savings measures would save the hospital.
That is something that a CSEA rep, who had traveled to the meeting from Albany, said was in the works.
