MASSENA - After 16 years of service to the town of Massena, Councilman Charles A. “Chuck” Raiti’s tenure on the town board came to an end Wednesday night with a resolution passed in his honor and the popping of a bottle of champagne at the close of the meeting.

Near the close of Wednesday night’s meeting after the town board had made its way through the evening’s agenda, Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray presented one more resolution to the board.

“The town council, on behalf of the citizens of the town, expresses appreciation to Councilman Raiti for all his years of service to the town council and entire community,” the resolution read, also noting that while Wednesday night may have been Mr. Raiti’s final town board meeting his term doesn’t officially expire until Dec. 31.

In addition to presenting Mr. Raiti with a framed copy of the resolution, Mr. Gray also presented him with a cap that read, “Massena Town Council Alumnus, Class of 2013.”

Mr. Raiti then offered his fellow board members a surprise of their own, when he pulled a bottle of champagne out from under the desk.

“Are we all going to drink from the bottle?” joked Town Bookkeeper Nancy Fregoe, to which Mr. Raiti replied, “Nope, I brought these red Solo cups.”

The resolution, passed almost unanimously with Mr. Raiti abstaining, also read, “The Massena town council honors and recognizes Charles “Chuck” Raiti for his many years of service, commitment and dedication to the town of Massena and wishes him all the best in his retirement and/or next endeavor.”
