Maguire, VanDeValk named Clarkson assistant lacross coaches


POTSDAM - The Clarkson University Athletic Department announced the addition of Kaila Maguire and Katie VanDeValk as assistant coaches for the Golden Knights’ women’s lacrosse program for the 2014 season.

A Potsdam Central graduate, Maguire is a 2013 graduate from the College of Brockport with a degree in Physical Education and Health Education where she was a two-sport athlete for the Golden Eagles, earning all-star honors in both women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer.

A midfielder for Brockport’s women’s lacrosse team, Maguire scored 109 career points, which ranks 16th all-time for the program, including 83 goals (15th all-time) and 26 assists. She also added 167 groundballs, caused 82 turnovers, and earned 90 draw controls. Brockport went 45-22 in the four-year stretch as Maguire started all but four contests among the 67 games. She earned All-SUNYAC First-Team honors, IWLCA First-Team All-Region honors and was an ECAC Mid-Atlantic Second-Team All-Star as a senior.

For the women’s soccer team at Brockport, Maguire was a two-time All-SUNYAC member, starting 58 times in 72 career games. She scored 15 goals and added 16 assists for 46 points, leading the team in goals and points as a junior. She was a captain for both the soccer and lacrosse teams as a senior.

VanDeValk, a 2013 graduate of Clarkson University with a degree in Biology and a minor in Business, was a two-sport athlete for the Golden Knights in both soccer and lacrosse and will serve as the program’s top assistant coach, while Maguire will be the program’s second assistant.

In 58 career games for the Knights’ lacrosse squad, VanDeValk scored 166 career goals and had 38 assists for 204 points, ranking second all-time at Clarkson in goals and points and fourth in assists. A four-year member of the team, VanDeValk earned Liberty League First-Team All-Star status from the midfield as a senior when the team posted its first winning season at 11-5. She led the team in caused turnovers (22), groundballs (41), and tied for the team lead with 53 goals. In 65 games with the Clarkson women’s soccer team, VanDeValk started 63 times in 65 career games, recording two goals and an assist despite playing defense for the majority of her career.

In addition to being a well-decorated student-athlete, VanDeValk was an excellent student, making the Dean’s List on five occasions. She was a four-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and in the spring of 2013 she was chosen as the Clarkson Athletic Department’s Ed Sayer Memorial Award recipient, an honor that recognizes an individual that exhibits passion for their teammates, an indelible work ethic, a passion for sport, and an appreciation of the intricacies and importance of teamwork.
