Massena, Potsdam girls skate to wins

Massena Central stretched its season-opening win streak to seven games with a 6-2 win at home over Section 10 rival St. Lawrence Central while Potsdam Central avenged one of its losses by skating to a 5-1 non-league decision over the Islanders in high school girls hockey action on Wednesday.

Massena 6, SLC 2: In a league matchup at the Massena Arena, the Lady Raiders built a 6-0 lead before going on to claim their seventh win.

Molly O’Connell opened the scoring at the 10:40 mark of the first period assisted by Ellen Greene before Katie MacCuaig made it 2-0 with just 10 seconds left by finishing off a play set up by Raechel Davis and Abbie Paquin.

MacCuaig tallied the eventual game-winner just six seconds into the second period. Bailey Dillabough pushed the lead to 4-0 at the 6:17 mark of the middle frame assisted by Maddy Mailhot.

The Lady Raiders then put the game out of reach with two goals 19 seconds apart in the 11th minute of the third period as Mailhot converted from MacCuaig and Davis at 10:22 and MacCuaig completed her hattrick assisted by Paquin.

The Larries Larries produced a quick scoring outburst of their own to close the game. Maddie Derouchie connected from Paige DeBeer and Sydney Collins at the 12:40 mark. Katie Lamica then skated it off the ensuing face-off to score the final goal of the game just six seconds later.

Maddi Dillabough turned aside 22 of the shots she faced working the crease for the Lady Raiders while Holly Zeldenrust logged 36 saves for SLC.

Massena will be hosting a weekend Holiday Tournament at the Massena Arena starting on Friday against Williamsville starting at 9 p.m. Potsdam and Bellows Free Academy of Vermont square off in the other first round game at 6:45 p.m. The Lady Larries are slated to play their next game on Monday, December 30, in Oswego.

Potsdam 5, Islanders 1: In a game moved to SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall Arena due to technical difficulties with ice-making equipment at Pine Street Arena, the Lady Sandstoners scored three times over the final five minutes of the second period in turning back the Islanders.

Kirstin Barkley opened the scoring off an assist from Kalie Grant 10:19 into the game for the only goal of the first period. Kelsey Green made it 2-0 at the 9:45 mark of the second assisted by Grant but the Islanders broke through for their only goal just 17 seconds later when Amanda Lingenfelter converted off an assist from Sydney Aubertine.

But Grant restored the two-goal lead just over a minute later with an unassisted goal then put the Lady Sandstoners ahead 4-1 when she scored from Barkley with 13 seconds left in the second period.

Jenny Tardelli closed out the scoring by finishing off a play set up by Ally Miller and Jayden Young with 3:44 left in regulation.

Sidney Molnar (7 saves) and Allie Compeau (8 saves) shared crease duties in the winning effort while Kayla McCabe stopped 26 of the shots she faced in the losing cause.

Potsdam (3-2) will take on Bellows Free Academy of Vermont on Friday night in the first game of the Massena Holiday Tournament at the Massena Arena starting at 6:45 p.m.

Canton 10, Salmon River 1: At the Canton Pavilion, the line of Margret Troiano (4 goals, 2 assists), Blake Orosz (1 goal, 2 assists) and Natalie Giglio (1 goal, 1 assist) combined for four goals and three assists leading the Lady Bears to the convincing league win.

Mary Kait Mace scored twice for Canton, Mimi Husinec tallied one goal and two assists, Elizabeth Collins passed out three assists, Lizzy Christy scored one goal and Molly Curtis and Paige Glasgow each passed out assists to back Elizabeth Burke’s eight saves.

Kerri Shenancogh scored the lone Salmon River goal unassisted and Abby Grant stopped six shots working the crease.
