CARTHAGE – Clinton (Slim) Willard Gates, 95, Selos Rd., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday evening, December 17th, 2013, while a resident of the Hospice House of Jefferson County.

Born in Watertown on September 19, 1918, the son of Cecil & Blanche “Bonnie” Dennee Gates. As a child, he lived in Oswegatchie and Natural Bridge before moving to Carthage in the Spring of 1926. He boarded in Potsdam in 1940 while working for the Niagara Hudson Corp. He was inducted into the United States Army Air Corp. in June 1942. During World War II, he served in the European Theater with the 1123rd Signal Battalion Co. C and 1709 Signal Battalion Co. C. He mustered out in November of 1945. He then resumed work for Niagara Mohawk in Gouverneur. He married Ruth Anna Marolf on December 5, 1945 in Carthage. He was employed by the company for 38 years, retiring as a line supervisor.

He was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth and his children and their spouses; Lorraine & Richard Doehling, South Carolina, Lee & Sharon Gates, Gouverneur, Timothy & Marsha Gates, Oswegatchie and Thomas Gates, Gouverneur. Also surviving are his siblings; Audrey Wilson, Carthage, Leon Gates, Williamson, NY; and Harry Gates, Dexter, 13 grandchildren and 19 great- grandchildren. He is predeceased by his brother, Bernard Gates and his sister, Teresa Weller.

A Funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 21st at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of the Lundy Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., 500 State St. Carthage, with the Rev. David Allison officiating. Calling hours will be held for two hours prior to the service, from 12:00 – 2:00 PM. Spring burial will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Naumburg.
