Ice storm coming: hazardous driving conditions expected

The National Weather Service has issued an ice storm warning.

From 7 p.m. tonight through Sunday night, up to an inch of ice could accumulate in Jefferson and Lewis counties, and the storm might lead to power outages. Forecasters with the weather service are advising area residents to postpone their travel plans. Jefferson County’s Fire & Emergency Management office also has issued a travel advisory Friday morning, warning drivers of “very slippery” frozen roads.

“The greatest threat is currently expected in the vicinity of the St. Lawrence and Black River valleys,” the National Weather Service said in its ice storm advisory.

The region has already responded to the warning. Four Jefferson County and four St. Lawrence County schools have closed early and four other schools across Jefferson, St. Lawrence and Lewis counties have cancelled after-school activities.

At noon, weather observers were reporting rain and fog and a temperature of 34 degrees in Watertown, with light snow spreading across the St. Lawrence River valley and on into Plattsburgh.
