CANTON Canton resident and The Journal paginator Dean M. Lichtermans debut is a morally and thematically ambitious novel.
At its crux, Write Place, Right Time is a pre-apocalyptic thriller, Mr. Lichterman said. He said he thought of the premise after watching several post-apocalyptic-themed movies based on books, including Steven Kings The Stand and Tim LaHaye and Jerry B. Jenkinss Left Behind series.
I have always watched movies and read books with post-apocalyptic themes, but I began to notice they spend little time explaining what actually happens before the apocalypse, Mr. Lichterman said. My book does the opposite of that.
While the novels circumstances are extraordinary, Mr. Lichterman juxtaposes them with ordinary characters. Readers will find the characters relatable, he said.
There are lots of things you have to deal with when an average person saves the day. Maybe they take the bus to work or go to the hospital after, Mr. Lichterman said. But those things happen and are written in a way to show how the characters and events are interconnected - or are they?
The eponymous protagonist, Don Lamplighter, is a combination of Mr. Lichtermans surname in English and his fathers first name.
A small town reporter, Don Lamplighters misadventures unwittingly begin after he spots a stranded vehicle on his way to cover a village board meeting.
In the world you have normal people solving problems, Mr. Lichterman said. Very few people are equipped with knowledge, the equipment or sometimes the desire to help people like superheroes do. In comic books, the hero is typically called, but for the average person, situations are thrust upon them, and you have to figure out on your own how to solve them.
The book sets up the next four novels in the series which will continue to follow Don Lamplighter, his wife, a local sheriff and the series villain as they play mental chess with each other, Mr. Lichterman said.
I am currently working on books two and three, he said. Its a fun series and a new genre and I think people will relate to and learn from the characters.
