Moving highway garage considered an option in Massena

MASSENA - Town officials have been discussing their options for their 50 year-old highway barn currently located on the South Raquette Road for several months ultimately deciding that building a new highway barn would likely be their best option.

That project, which has yet to go out to bid, has an estimated price tag of $2.6 million, and until this week the location of the garage had not been discussed,

Village water service, which has been suggested to the town, would cost roughly $300,000.

Town Councilman John F. Macaulay suggested possibly looking at alternative location for the garage.

“Unfortunately to provide village water at its current location is a pretty significant item,” he said. “Most of the property we own isn’t really in a good location.”

However, the town’s soon to be acquired Horton Road property, Mr. Macaulay said, would be the perfect location for a new highway garage

Noting that the Horton Road has village water service, he added, “If you drew a line through the center of Massena, you’re going right through the Horton Road.

Highway Superintendent Frank Diagastino said the town’s current highway garage is located in the “southwest corner” of town.

Should the town elect to build a new highway garage at the site of its current one, Mr. Diagastino said they could avoid building a new salt storage shed, something they would have to do if their new garage was built elsewhere.

“It’s going to cost us $300,000 for water, but even if we have to spend $300,000 for a salt building, it still might be a better option because it’s more centrally located,” Mr. Macaulay said.

No formal action was taken by the board as the discussion is expected to continue at a future meeting.
